Work Worth Celebrating

At the end of each semester, we throw a party with our English Students and recognize all of the hard work that goes into learning a new language. We look forward to these special days - they are filled with joy, laughter hugs and so much love. What is evident is that learning English is not the only thing being accomplished. These celebrations are also a demonstration of the friendship and community that is being built among the volunteers, staff and neighbors.

This past year, English classes have grown significantly in our Portland and Lewiston locations, combining to more than 300 students attending classes each week. We offer multi-level English learning classes and tutoring for our immigrant neighbors. There are more than a dozen languages and nations represented in almost every class, including Angola, Somalia, Ukraine, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Azerbaijan.

This ministry is a team effort, with many volunteers filling crucial roles from childcare to leading a full class. For them, welcoming these new neighbors into our community isn’t a chore - it’s a blessing. Check out all of the smiles in the photo gallery below!

Each gift will continue ministries like our English Language Learning Classes and Turtoring.

Early in this career, Joel was impacted greatly by work within refugee communities in Amman, Jordan and Clarkston, GA. He discovered God's great love for these vulnerable communities as well as the gift that refugees and immigrants offer to a welcoming city.
