NewsCenter Maine Features Common Grounds Cafe

Over the past year and a half, The Root Cellar has created a first-time job experience for neighborhood teens through Common Grounds Cafe. Teens are given roles such as cook, food prep, barista, and front counter.

This has become a space for neighbors from all walks of life to gather together, grab a bite, a good cup of coffee and create build a relationship with one another.

News Center Maine stopped by and interviewed a few of our teens and our Program Coordinator Damon Crouse about this unique program and the impact it’s having on the Tree Streets Neighborhood in Lewiston. Check it out!

We are so proud of the incredible work of these teens! Keep reading to learn how one teen in particular is making an impact in her neighborhood!

Meet Zara, Common Grounds Cafe Teen Manager!

by Damon Crouse, RC Program Coordinator

While operating the cafe I noticed one teen that stood out in every role she was placed in. Zara, a rising 10th grader, would often take responsibility not only for her own role but helping out all others when she was able.

A few weeks ago, I approached her about taking on a management position within the cafe and that was met with much excitement from her. She has been in the management role now for 2 weeks and - no surprise - she is doing incredibly well.

In less than six months we have seen Zara work her first day at the cafe, learn every role in the cafe and now manage the cafe as a rising 10th grader.

This is what the Lew Crew is all about, giving opportunities for teens to learn, grow and thrive! Be sure to say hi to Zara the next time you visit Common Grounds Cafe.

Zara and the whole Common Grounds Cafe team were featured this past week on News Center Maine!
